I went for my first six month MRI back in November since I was given radiation in May of last year. He was planning an embolization for my AVM which is in my occipital parietal lobe but during my first angiogram he found an aneurysm. The last MRI showed that my AVM is responding to the radiation but the aneurysm hasn't changed. He said that he would coil it but it was up to me because it's not that large. I'm thinking about having it coiled because I'm very stressed that it will bleed which adds to the strain on it anyway. I'm also having MANY other health problems which aren't helping either. I would love to hear from someone who has had coils in the past to know how much recovery is needed or if you've needed more than one coil or how it all works. I've asked my doctors who are very helpful but they haven't been through it. I have twin 1 year olds and I need to be healthy for them and not out of commission too long.
My son had onyx glue and coils prior to his surgeries. His recovery was not much different from when he had his angiograms, expect he had to spend one night in PICU to monitor his B/P. Other then that he had headaches for a while afterward. Not sure if it was from the embos or the AVM bleed. Hope this helps.
I've had to GK radiation treatments for my AVM (and will have another). I had to have a craniotomy to clip my 2 aneurysms. A friend from a dog message board (I have Akitas) had an aneurysm rupture this summer & she had coils done after the rupture. She had to spend longer in the hospital than I did for the craniotomy because she had a rupture & I didn't. She was back taking college classes, working at the vet. clinic & working out in the gym (she competes in body building) fairly quickly. She just had her 6 month checkup/angiogram last week, and they kept her to add more coils. She is already back at the gym (doing cardio & not lifting weights) and back working at the vet clinic.
Thank you this helps a lot. I'm sure it's just fear of the unknown. My neurologist did say it wouldn't be much more than an angiogram recovery and I was in the PICU for one of mine because they were going to do the embolization the next day. So I guess this will be less. I'm just worried about being able to pick up my boys. Thank you for the help and I hope your son is doing well!!
Thank you. I'm not supposed to be lifting my twins to I'm hoping that coils will help strengthen the aneurysm enough so that I don't have to worry about it so much. I appreciate the information!
