Aura Symptoms

Does anyone here suffer from seizure like auras? I don't get that a often as I used to but doctors have told me it is anything from seizures to anxiety. After the aura I get very fatigued and sometimes taking a Xanax helps. I am also looking for anyone who is possibly local to me in the Reading/Kutztown/Allentown area.

Hi Happy,

I live near Lewisburg. Have you gone to Hershey Medical center yet? That's the next place I am going if I decide to have mine (avm) treated again. I went to Pittsburg the first time (in 2007). I've called them and they have an entire team that specializes with AVMs.

I never understood it when people talk about auras with seizures(?). I live with seizures but, I don't have a dr. to help me with them. Just my family dr. who goes by what my neurosurgeon said. My seizures don't show up on an EEG.
I have anxiety too, thanks to the AVM. I can tell the difference between my anxiety acting up and having a seizure. I'm willing to bet you are having a seizure and it's not your anxiety.

Ben

Hey Ben,
I have gone to Hershey. I saw Dr. Cockroft. The only issue with it being an actual seizure if I have been able to somewhat control then as they happen and it has been my understanding you can't control seizures. I have never read anything or been told this is possible. I do know that there is A LOT of stress in my life(mostly from family) and social anxiety is through the roof and I have yet to get it under control. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Happy,

You are right - we can't control seizures, except by medications. But one thing I have learned, on my own I might add. If we can figure out what triggers it, we can somewhat control the triggers. Like you - stress is a big trigger for me. Along with too much physical activity. If I over do it working around my house or helping my friends, then I'm certain to have one. When I pay close attention to how my body is reacting to things, then I can usually stop it (or lower it) by not pushing myself and laying down for a while.

Anxiety -- I have an anxiety med. I take when I need to, Ativan. I've been on Xanax too but, that made me sleepy. Perhaps you could talk to your dr about prescribing you something. Another thing I do is - I watch my caffeine intake. Too much of it will make my anxiety worst and that's been known to give me a seizure too. Whether you drink soda, coffee, or tea. Pay close attention to how it is effecting you. I know some people that swear by chamomile tea (it has a relaxing quality to it). That's worth a try too.

Ben

I'm sorry you have stress from some of your family. They should be more supportive of you, in my opinion (if that's the case). Maybe you could do some research on basic psychology and that might be able to teach you how to deal with them. I'm not kidding. I have a friend who studied psychology and he has helped me a lot. Some of his ideas included - taking control of our thoughts by changing how we are looking at it.-- Change our perception of it. And.. how to politely take control of a conversation. Just some food for thought (smiles).
