I had a root canal the day before this happened. I was told that had nothing to do with the AVM - is that true?
Before what happened? A bleeding?
yes
If your blood pressure shot up over the pain/dentist, it is possible that it helped trigger a bleed.
Just a guess though.

I had a root canal at age 14, and another at age 40. Didn't find my AVM (unruptured) until I was almost 43.
I've had 4 root canals (or more) since the discovery of my avm. It never effected it. Or vice, versa. That's my experience from them.
I believe the biggest fear is the infection going into the brain. Which is why most dentist give you a strong antibiotic. I can tell you from experience, it starts off with dementia. Not fun. Hee Hee Yeap, you read that right... I had one that infected my brain once. :)
