Keppra (generic)

I had a fun break through seizure, ok fun is a poor choice of wording. I'm joking so I am feeling better. My doc upped my dose of anti seizure again starting immediately. I had just filled my old prescription last night and never opened the package. However the pharmacy could not take it back. I kind of figured this before I asked them but they are so expensive and it seems such a waste. I have good insurance so it doesn't cost me much but it was only months ago I remember trying to figure out with much dread how to get the next refill without insurance and the cost being over $300. I asked the pharmacist if I could bring them somewhere for someone in need but she didn't know. I can't stand the thought of throwing them away knowing someone could be out there feeling like I did.

Any ideas?

Hello Holly
it is a shame that the pharmacy can not take back the drugs and give it away or at a low cost. I have heard of this place http://www.pparx.org/ but I have not used it personally
You could try calling them and see if you can send them your prescription.
Also maybe someone from this site can use it or you might even try your doctor to see if they are prescribing it to someone who can use it. If you find a place let please let me know
Angela

Holly I am surprised that your pharmacy don't know if they can take them back or not. Here in Oz, we can take back un-opened meds and they are then sent to other people in need. Of course, we don't get a cash refund but as I have recently been trying to get my meds under control with seizures, I have able to take quite a lot of un-opened meds back to the pharmacy. Perhaps your Doctor would have some ideas of what you can do with them. Good luck!

Thank you all for your quality info and quick replies. I will look at the site and also call my doctor.

Jim, it is the generic Keppra called Levetiracetam. They had me on 750 and now 1000 2xday.

I will keep you all posted.

Oh, Holly...while that hasn't happened with my seizure med...it has happened with my thyroid med which goes up and down often...What new dose are they putting your Keppra on?

1000x2/day. I realize a lot of people are on higher. Mine seems to keep rising slowly. I had in October been bumped up to 750. I have an email to the site suggested above and a call into the local Salvation Army.

Hi Holly,
I'm so sorry to hear you had a seizure. :(
For many, many years I was on Dilantin, but as I aged I couldn't maintain therapeutic levels & after #4 surgery the level dropped more & I seized the moment while in ICU. :( At that point they put me on (generic) Keppra & weaned me off Dilantin.
I initially started on a high dose, but am presently taking 500 mg. generic Keppra twice a day & do fine on it.
One of the drawbacks of Dilantin is potential bone loss.
As for finding a new home for the meds you can't return, what about Craigs List???
I hope your drs. get your seizures under control soon!
Take care,
Patti

Holly, I also am on 1,000 in the AM and 1,000 in the PM....I pray that it now works for you! Keep the Faith, good Friend...I want you seizure free!

Are you trying to get rid of the Keppra script? (if I understand correctly)

I'm on 1000mg Keppra twice a day just as others have posted. Hope it works for you, not really sure it is for me, but it's not making anything worse.

Hi Holly...sorry to hear about your seizure and hope that you are feeling better now as we approach a new year that will hopefully be filled with lots of AVM-FREE updates!!!

I have a full bottle of 750's they can't take back at the pharmacy. I don't want to just throw it away knowing others don't have insurance or money. You can read a bit more here...

They increased me to 1000.

Thanks Mischele! <3
