Nina, Gamma Knife is a treatment that using precision radiation targets the AVM and shrinks it in time. If they can not remove it surgically they use the GK. It’s a very good tool with much success.
Oh ok Ive read about!!! Not sure of my sister will need that so far the doctors are saying where her avm is, it’s very reachable thank god!!! Gamma knifed do have good success from what I read!! Avm is a horrible thing to have but today’s technology makes most cases treatable!!!
Your sister is luck that they can reach it. Maybe they can totally remove it and she will recover 100%. Our prayers are with her.

Hi! Sorry about your sister. I had a severe headache and AVM bleed/ stroke. I had an AVM in the right frontal lobe. The bleed was major and they had to do immediate surgery. It couldn’t wait. They removed the AVM. I woke in the hospital 2 days later. I didn’t go through all the sedation and draining your sister went through but it seems her AVM is in a similar area. My neuro said if you’re gonna have an AVM that is the best spot for it. I had no brain damage at all despite massive swelling in my brain during the bleed. I did not need any rehab. About a week after the surgery, I was walking around (against doctors advice…I snuck out of my room so I could go to the lobby n see my kids who were too little to come visit)…I was out of the hospital in 2 weeks and back to work in 2 months. My speech was fine, didn’t need physical therapy and had no memory loss. My doctors were shocked and could not believe my good luck. The only outward sign of my stroke was that my face was paralyzed on the left side for about 3 weeks. Stay hopeful. There is definitely hope that she will come out of this ok. I definitely agree. I went back to work as a teacher 2 months after my craniotomy. I had bills to pay and kids to feed. I definitely regret it. My headaches were horrible. At the time, I felt like I had no choice but looking back I should have rested and took my time to go back but I almost wanted to prove to myself that I could be back to normal.
Re. the possible wait. That was definitely one of the things our neurosurgeon considered. They will not do a craniotomy unless it is absolutely urgent. Many people live quite comfortably for some time after an AVM diagnosis. I am certain she will be monitored regularly and maybe given medications to keep severe symptoms at bay. If they see no urgency, it will give your sister and family time some time to prepare for her eventual surgery and recovery. Sending you all best wishes for the future. Vicki
Yes Andy she has suffered alot but we hope they can remove eveything so she can completely recover!!! Very excited about her recovery!!! She is having better nights everyday!!! She is in a sedation induced coma but for a purpose to allow her brain to heal!!! I just got back from the hospital and to me she looked so much better!!! I didn’t stay too log becuz my head has been hurting but I am convinced it’s bcuz all that’s going on, my nerves n anxiety :-/ having to stay strong can take a toll on ur body too!!! I am just resting taking it easy for my sister :0)!!!

My sister has an 11yr old and that’s going to motavate my sister to want to rush her recovery but I don’t think my mom will be having that lol!!! My sister is a huge remodel in out family and we need her to be 100% better!

Hello Vicki so my mom god the story all wrong!!! She will have the sugery hopefully with in a few weeks to a month BUT will be followed up for the next 5yrs!!! Lol my mom always get things wrong when she is nerves but hey gotta love her :0)
