Options for very large avm/surgery?

JUDY IS CONSIDERING SEVERAL OPTIONS. WHAT OUR NUREOSURGEN IS PROPOSING IS THE FOLLOWING; DOING AN ARTERIAL INTERVENTION THRUOUGH THE GROUEN. GOING UP TO HER BRAIN AND INJECTING THIS GLUE INTO HER AVM. THIS WOULD TAKE 5 OR 6 OF THESE, INORDER TO INJECT ALL THOSE VEINS IN HER MASSIVE AVM. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS!! COULD PUNCURE ONE AND SHE WOULD BE “DEAD”!! WE HAVE HERD OF- BRAIN BY-PASS BUT WE KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT THE PROCEDURE AND OR IF WOULD BE AN OPTION THAT WOULD BE A LOT LESS “RISKEY”?? IF ANY ONE OUT THERE, KNOWS MORE ABOUT THIS BRAIN BY-PASS, VS THE OTHER OPTION THEY ARE PROPOSING, WE WOULD DEAPLY APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS AND OR HELP??? THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR CONSIDERATIONS!!

The first procedure you are describing is embolization. Most Neurosurgeons use that procedure prior to surgery, whether it is radiosurgery, or conventional surgery. My daughter only needed one, but there are lots of people on this site who have had 5 and more to shrink their AVMs. If you do a search for embolization, you will find a bunch of posts. It is a very, very common procedure in the AVM world. As for Brain-by-pass, I don’t know anything about that.

This a very interesting link you may have already seen, but the doctor on the link is Dr Martin from UCLA and he has done a lot of treatments on member of this site. Welcome to the site ,I think you will find that our member will help you any way we can. Gordon

Hi, the doctors told me my AVM is fairly large and when I sought a second opinion was told that I should not have an embolization due to the significant risks involved, so I am now awaiting the cyberknife procedure which is pinpoint radiation treatment. Has this been mentioned as a possible alternative?

Thank you very much for your imput. judy is 64 and this last bleed almost took her from us! she is having a very diffulcult time trying to recover ( blood going down thru her spine, into her buttets and legs are giving her termendus pain! She is so weak. we are making some progress, but it is slow. this embolization process has been explained to us by a specialist. her avm is so large and the risk factors keep going up, each time she would have one of these done. Her bleeds ( two in 65 days ) may have been caused by her masstoied enfection that they found when they did her cat-scans?? we did not even know she had this condition until then. i a trying to find out throught the doctor, if this could possible be the cause or irratation to the bleeds?? can’t get an answer from them??

I had a spinal AVM and saw an Interventional Radiologist and a Neurosurgeon they glued them closed. It worked for me and although it took two attempts with angiograms my symptoms were 98% releived and the chance of a bleed out is to great to not have them repaired. I would rather walk around with these headaches I ahev now than not be able to walk at all. My AVM was a result of an accident in the military in 1982 and grew from T-3 to C-3 and caused me to end up with a multitude of problems to the point I was walking with a cane and going down hill rapidly. The MAYO Clinic, Johns Hopkins and a lot of other clinics and hospitals are doing the procedures. My doctor was Creed Rucker here in Tucson az From Radiology Limited. HE is a wonder skilled docor.

They tried doing that gluing to fix my AVM. MY AVM is 6cm big the 1st doctor thought it was a great idea. But the 2ed team of 5 doctors I was seeing said it should have never even been tried as it was like trying to “glue the ocean shut” if its big not a good idea
