Hi Everyone,
First I want to say thanks to all of you for all your support and prayers. My son had his craniotomy on the 11th and it went well.It was a 10 hr surgery but the surgeon says he got the entire avm.We need to get an angiograph done in 6 weeks to confirm this.He is doing well.No pain at the incision site. However he has been having fever on and off for the last three days.We are still in hospital and hoping the fever settles soon.Anyone had a similar issue?
hey,
the weekend i came home from my surgery i had fever for 3-4 days..i took it as a good sign my body was fighting...it finally went down..i called my surgeon to see if i should be worry he advised that if it continued to come in for a spinal tab....needless to say i sucked it up and pray it would go down and it did.
Hi, Sophie, I'm very happy your son is doing well. This discussion will be of interest to you, regarding the fever: http://www.avmsurvivors.org/forum/topics/postcraniotomy-fever
Hi Sophie, so happy all went well, yes the fever after surgery with our son had us so worried also, when you think you over come one obstacle then there’s another, but keep the faith! He will over come this too I know how hard this is to see him in this stage , try to stay positive and talk to him and let him know the love is there! Faith hope believe …
Hi Nay,
yeah we are just hoping the fever disappears. Our surgeon too spoke of a spinal tap if it doesn't stop. Its a bit better so fingers crossed. Its been 9 days since surgery,5 days of fever. On the upside his stitches came off today.
Thanks Pandora.
How long did the fever last? Its been 5 days now and the frequency of fever is better and its not going as high.We are hoping its phasing off.Just so tired and want to be back home...to go to bed knowing our boy is free of this avm and all is well again.
So glad to hear that the surgeon was able to get rid of your son's AVM, Sophie!
Very glad he is now AVM free. Congratulations! I developed a fever a few days after my craniotomy as well. It was meningitis. I don't want to alarm you but it is a possible side effect of open brain surgery. I would think though if your son's fever is coming and going that this wouldn't be the case. Also, my fever was very high. In the 105 range. I hope his fever subsides and you get to take him home.
My daughter ran a fever off and on for several days both after craniotomy (hers was emergency craniotomy due to AVM rupture)and after her 2nd brain surgery to remove the AVM. The first time they had scheduled surgery to put her bone flap back on actually was cancelled due to her running fever. They would do cultures each time she had the fever to make sure there wasn’t any infection. Cultures always came back clear. They mentioned two things that could have been causing it since there was no infection. One was that due to her brain surgery that her brain was having trouble regulating her temperature and two that some medicines can cause a fever which they called a “drug fever.” To this day not really sure what the cause was. Eventually it went away and we were able to get the bone flap back in for her third and final surgery. Glad he is doing good. Praying fever will go away. Take care!
Hi Sophie! Such wonderful news to hear of your sons successful surgery! Please let us know the results of the angiogram so that we can all celebrate and rejoice with you!
