Vanity Question for Brain AVMers

I think that someone told me that dying hair is not safe, but with the memory problems this has caused, I can't remember for sure.

I know that graying hair is the least of my problems...but if this AVM has to make me FEEL so much older, I'd like to at least LOOK younger! LOL

Connie

That is something I never heard. You have aroused my curiosity! Anyone know the answer?

I guess not, Barbara! lol

I have an appointment in a few weeks with my neurologist and ask her then.

I have not heard that before I know some hair coloring is bad and so is that hair straighten thing
I would check with your doctor and you can always go to a beauty supply place and get a semi perm not s bad hair color that does not use a ton of chemicals
Let us know what the doctor tells you

Hi Connie, my daughter has an avm and has had gamma knife surgery. She has highlights in her hair and often straightens it and has had no problems (touch wood) xx

Thank you all for your responses! Based on them, I am feeling hopeful. As soon as I discuss this I will post her response here.

Hi Connie. I don't color my hair but I do put a chemical relaxer in every 6 weeks. I haven't been warned or told that it's not safe. The only challenge I have is I have to be quick about putting it in now (which I do it pretty quick) is lifting my arms high to obviously put it in, standing and looking in the mirror, and then the lengthy shower to wash it all out. Afterwards I usually have to recoop and nap, but that's to be expected. I wish you the best :-)

Hi Connie
I have used a semi-permanent hair dye for about ten years. Separate from any brain surgery/ problem issues, the packets say to do a skin test as anyone can possibly get a very nasty allergic reaction - the sort where your face expands and you end up in hospital. I dye my hair, it makes me feel better!

Thank you, Jessica. I have always have to rest after showering! lol I have difficulty keeping my left arm up, due to AVM causing left side weakness. I cannot manipulate that hand very well either, so I would probably have to go to a salon to have my hair colored.

Thank you, Flower..I'm feeling hopeful now!

UPDATE*** I spoke to my neuro last week; hair coloring is safe! That said, she says the chemical smell could bring on a bad headache. She recommended using an herbal/semi-permanent dye to avoid the headache...just like Flower and Angela recommended!
