hi all, this may seem a bit of a strange question but is valid apparently… I ve been told by someone at my hospital that they cant (wont?) do embolisations when you have your period. I can see this being an inconvenience but cant see how it would stop them doing the procedure completely. Has anyone else had experience of this or know any more? Thanks.
No, but i am now late for mine, and wondering if the angio and embolisation may have caused a delay?
i ve had two so far amanda and it hasnt for me but everyones different i guess.
After my craniotomy, my period was about 8 weeks late…the swelling in the brain can cause you to stop menstruating…not sure if embolization causes swelling…

Thanks Toni at least I know it IS possible, I didn’t think it would be a problem but that’s what one of the nurses has told me - so now I may have to change my next scheduled embolization because I’ll have my period then

OMG! I was just about to ask a question about this lol. I missed my period after my craniotomy last month, but now I’ve had it twice this month. Got it at the last day of March about then it ended in very early April (it was a short one). 2 weeks later last Monday I started again! I was really confused and a bit freaked out, I don’t want to go through life having 2 periods a month, one is bad enough! lol
I figure it’s probably just my body regulating itself back to where it was (I usually don’t get my period til around now anyways).
Anyways, I was on my period when they did my first embolization, but I was super stressed with everything going on that the flow was barely there, just enough to be known that I was menstruating. Didn’t cause any problems that I know of though.
Erin,
Whether or not I was going to be menstruating at the time of my embolization wasn’t even brought up by my neurosurgeon, or anyone else. As far as I can tell it wasn’t anything they were at all concerned about, and until now I’ve never heard of it being an issue (but it is a possibility).
Thanks Tori, that’s exactly what I thought! Fingers crossed I’ll get in next week, if not can still go ahead with that one! Sending best wishes to you.

Erin- I’ve been on my period at the time of embo’s. Inoconvenient for sure, but there was never any issue. I did ask and all of the staff told me it was fine. Three embo’s in a row (I go monthly) till I finally got off schedule. It was a pain, but that was it! The only thing I can think of for them saying they won’t do it…is if a person was uncomfortable wearing a tampon as I can see any type of pad getting in the way if they are accessing through your artery at your groin (as most are.) I also know of a young girl who had just started hers and was going in for embo. From what I understand she was not yet using tampons (her first actual period) but it still wasn’t an issue. So I’d find out for sure what the reason would be. Maybe there is a valid reason. But like you, I think it just seems like it wouldn’t matter.

hmm, ive never heard of this before. i had an angiogram while on my period but never an embo
I think maybe I am experiencing what Toni had, ie. spotting only, almost nonexistent, but maybe enough for me to know it is a period. Confusing as it may be, I also have a medical condition called Ashermans Syndrome, where I have scarring of the cervix, and had a procedure a few weeks ago to fix that. Thus, getting this period defines whether it needs to be done again, that is, if I don’t get it, more surgery in that department. I tell you, some days I ponder having a hysterectomy, as it would fix both the AVM and the Ashermans…
