Hi all,
Do you know where one can find an electric wheelchair that is controlled by the caregiver, rather than the user?
I have a close friend who more than a year ago had a brain hemorrhage that was caused by an AVM. He survived but got some severe deficiencies, including getting disabled and needing caregivers most waken hours. We now want to find him a motorized wheelchair so his caregivers can help him out of his apartment more easily. His neighborhood is hilly in all directions and it's too hard to push a regular wheelchair around manually. He can't get a regular electric wheelchair though, because he is currently not able to safely control it on his own (both we and his doctors agree on this). So we are looking for one that his caregiver can control for him, similar to when they push him around in a regular wheelchair, only with a motor for power.
We're assuming there has to be some around, or maybe a way to modify a regular one so the controls are on the back, but the only safe option we've found so far is a double seated scooter (https://www.google.com/search?q=double+electric+scooter). This could work to go around the house, but seems to be harder to fit in a van when he wants to go further, since it's quite a bit bigger.
Any suggestions on where to look are appreciated!
Thanks
Ps. I'm new to this site but have been reading posts for some time. Really great to see all the activity and support from everyone!
