Craniotomies and Back pain..Help!

Ok so I had my Craniotomy about 2 weeks ago. I just got the staples out and I am doing really well considering I had 2 brain surgeries. I am walking around, on the computer typing, trying to hardest to ready, doing some crafts etc. SO for the most part I am doing well. I am still on pain meds every 4 hours for the pain due to the swelling in my head, and of course my head hurts. BUT there are 2 places that I just recently learned were also messed with. My jaw, and a nerve at the base of the skull that goes down the back ( on the right side for me since that is where they did the surgery)

The jaw thing is just annoying and do special exercises from my DR to re stretch and restrengthen the muscles, but my back good lord!
It is SOOOO painful! this nerve gets aggravated and my shoulder blade and one side of my rib in the back just goes into knots on top of knots. We have tried so many different thigns to stop it and alleviate the pain, with little success. I used Biofreeze, but after a couiple of days it started burnn my skin.I use Tiger Balm now and that seems to work better. I get in the hot tub use the heating pad. I am contemplating going adn seeing my chiropractor, but not sure how safe that would be, or even if were to go and get a professional assage.

Anyone else having this problem? or have any suggestions?

Alyssa, this is going to sound crazy, but there is a book that really helped me. It’s called “Pain Free, A Revolutionary Method For Stopping Chronic Pain”. I have a compressed disc in my neck that was causing nerve damage, and major pain and numbness in my back and arm. The book is just a series of simple exercises (stretches really) that focus on getting everything kind of back in alignment. There are different exercised dependent on where the pain is, but really, there are sections for just about every part of your body. See if you can find the book at the library and try it before you buy it. It took me about a week of doing the exercises every day before I got relief, but it was total relief and now I turn to that book for any new ache or pain and haven’t been disappointed yet.

Good idea Trish…I sent your message to three in my family who have pain! Thanks!

Well the back pain, the Dr explained to me when I got the staples out, was because the nerve from the base of the cranium that goes down through the back neck and shoulder on that side got irritated while they were doing surgery. I think I have it under control pretty well. It;s not a conic problem or anything, I was just curious if anyone else had the same issues after their surgery, I am only 3 weeks post op.

ok, then it should get better, i am havin trouble with my thighs from bein still so long doin the embo on the 14th for almost 8hrs then doin the other surgery on the 15th for almost 11 hrs but i know i will be ok soon will keep prayin for both of us to make a full recovery from this. be bless and take care of yourself.

Lyssa, I just noticed your comment about jaw pain after your cranio. This is the first I have anyone else comment about this. My temporal muscle was cut during my cranio and my jaw has been so messed up. It snaps and gets stuck a lot. What are doing to help yours? I am beginning to think my neck and shoulders may also by screwed up too because of the surgery. My neck is always crackling and in pain. I guess I didn’t realize the cranio could cause so many problems. I hope your doing better. I can relate to what you have been through. The surgery was really, really, rough for me too!
