Cyberknife at Stanford

Has anyone underwent the cyberknife procedure with Dr. Chang out of Stanford? Am debating this for my C4/C5 AVM. Thank you in advance!

I think @kellycm and @FamilyFirst are both parents of patients who’ve had cyberknife under Steven Chang. Hopefully they’ll see my mention and tell us a little more.

Hi Mike (thanks for the mention, Dick) - my 20 year old son had CyberKnife treatment at Stanford with Dr. Chang in 2018 for a brain AVM. We were very pleased - outcome could not have been better for him. It took 4 years for full efficacy. Dr. Chang and staff were great. Wishing you all the best, whatever your decision.

I’ve not had it at Stanford, but did have it at the end of January in the UK.

The MRI and angiogram beforehand on the day when more invasive if you like than the actual GammaKnife. You don’t hear a thing or feel a thing when you go in and just lie there listening to some music or the radio.

The only slightly unnerving part is your head being locked in for the duration. (An hour in my case). But you lay there really just relaxing wondering if anything is actually happening and before you know it after listening to the radio for a while you’re out.

The frame fitting itself was also the most perturbing part of the day, but in reality it was nothing more than mildly uncomfortable really. It’s just more the look of the frame and people using screwdrivers that can make you feel unnerved!

But once this is on you get used to it fairly quickly to be honest.

I was advised GK was the only viable option with the big plus being its less invasive nature, whilst the downside being I’m now waiting 2 years possibly for an MRI and 4 years for the gold standard angiogram to confirm if the 192 beams of Gamma Radiation has done their work.

In the mean time you can use AI to augment your pictures slightly, to convince any kids you know that you’re turning into the Incredible Hulk…

You can warn them not to make you angry :face_savoring_food:
