My neurosurgeon told me that AVMs strike mostly men in their 60s & 70s. I am 62 and had a spinal dural AVF surgically ligated last year.
Does anyone have any of the statistics on these things, or can you refer me to review papers?

donlndavis this is very interesting thing to hear. I am a 25 year old female and have talked to quite a few neurologists and neurosurgeons who did my craniotomy. I have asked so many questions on how old people usually are and is it weird this bled now. The doctors just had no description on age, the avm decides to do what it wants When it wants. The only thing I have ever heard and read is that males have it more than females. I don’t know if any of that helped. I just know I was so questionable after my random bleed. I hope you find all the info you need to answer your questions and God bless!
No don, I remember another little boy while I was laid up waiting to go into my craniotomy. He was pitching a fit and when I came out of mine my surgeon put me up in the pediatric recovery unit because of how mild manner I was. Through pulling three IV’s while sedated. And I remember my mom telling me a story of me asking if I could be moved away from this one kid that was screaming bloody murder, and the doctors okaying to move me to the pediatrics level. Where I rehabilitated.
DonInDavis, the older men observation is not consistent with the makeup of this community for either spinal AVMs or AVMs in general. Infants to seniors, men and women, are all fully represented here in no particular pattern that I have been able to discern. Puberty and pregnancy/childbirth are two "risk" periods for avm activity, due to hormones, so we do have a lot of members who join or whose families join during those times.
DonlnDavis, I'm quite surprised that your neurosurgeon told you that AVM's strike mostly men in their 60s and 70s. That doesn't make sense at all. People that have AVM's are all genders and all ages.
