During my craniotomy the neurosurgeon drilled 9 holes in my head. As I understand it, all but 3 were filled in and covered with a plate. Two are a little bigger than a dime and one is the size of a quarter and they are like craters on top of my head. I can also feel the depressions where they sawed in between the holes. Will any of this bone grow back together? They are still very sore and hurt all day. It has been 6 months and I thought they should feel a lot better by now.
I have an avm that was treated last week with LINAC therapy. I am also a RN in a neuro-science center in NJ. As far as I know, the holes may get a bit smaller, but they will not fill in completely unless the surgeon put some kind of bone in them to seal them. I would talk to your neurosurgeon. Sometimes they leave burr holes to keep the swelling off your brain. I hope this info helps
The dents will be there forever so enjoy your new shaped head! You will get used to them. Can’t answer re: if bone grows back. My craniotomy holes were ‘filled in’ with bone dust. I can remember that my head hurt pretty badly for quite a while after & was very sore.

For Chari’s surgery, they replaced the part they took out, sewed it in via holes they drilled in the skull, then mixed a combination of bone stuff (putty?), a glue like stuff, and “fertilizer” (I don’t know, something that would make the bones heal faster. They told us it would grow shut and be strong as before.

They won’t grow in and the Public Relations firm I work for does work for Stryker who make the bone paste that fills in our holes! They also make a bunch of other stuff for hospitals. For those of us in the US do you remember the hair club for men commercials? I am also a client.
Thanks for all your responses. I plan to ask my neurosurgeon exactly what he did put in the holes. All I know is he said he filled some and not the others. I guess he thought the ones left open didn’t matter because my hair covers them. I guess I will have to just used to them. In the scheme of things its not that big of deal. Thanks, again. It sure is nice to have all of you to talk to!

I have a number of dents in my heads since the surgery in addition to a number of bumps where the metal plates are (i teach fifth graders…they are constantly asking to feel my head) I don’t think it grows…I also have a spot that feels like a split in my skull. I ma thinking in time that might shift closer together but I don’t know
I can put an egg in the dent on top of my head, does anyone else have any tricks?!
That’s hilarious! I just tried it and the egg fit in my dent too!

OMG so did I Sue!!! I am so glad there are other people who can look and find the humor in all of this! My hair is to thick, but I got it to balance a few seconds. Fun with brain surgery who knew!? My sons and their friends think it is awesome I have holes in my head and that they are supposed to be there. I think it’s kind of cool too. Wear your battle scars like the medals of honor that they are!
You go girl!!!
