Draining vessels

Hi all you wonderful people!

Recently we were told that we need to close Jarrod's VoG AVM URGENTLY. However we've also been told that we need to see if there are sufficient draining vessels in his face for the brain to drain. Does anyone know if this can be done by CT Scan with contrast, or does it have to be Angio, as we only have one femoral access point left. so not sure if we should risk it for that or leave it for future embolisations.

Thanks as always for your input.

Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Can't address the first issue. Are you saying there's a limit on the number of times you can have an angio due to point of insertion? I've never heard that (though it might be true). Chari had probably 5-8 angios over a 5 year period. I have read here of a person who had over 15 embolizations, which would require angio access. So I didn't think there was a limit.

As a side note, I'm constantly amazed that DRs can poke a hole in a major artery, do their thing, then pull the instruments out, and six hrs later you are good to go. Seems to me that you could develop, oh, say, a LEAK! But I guess the body heals faster than I give it credit for. Have a great day,

Hi Lynn. It’s my understanding that MRI’s are more accurate than a CT. You may want to ask your doctor about it. I don’t know what you mean by only having one access point left. This is new to me. I had multiple angios with no problem.

Thanks, What has happened is that they lost the venous drainage on the left due to stenosis. I.e. not acting quick enough to close the AVM. because he's very little still the femoral artery has collapsed. I understand this is not an issue when you're older but when you're 8 days old its appears to be a contraindication.

I sense that MRI with contrast is the best approach but it would appear that because of all the metal artifacts (15 boston coils and an amplatzer) it is kindof defunct. Obviously I'm waiting for the medical team to come back to me, but I like this site more for info.

Thanks so much for replying.

Agreed, I'm sure that is the case, they keep telling us he needs to grow and that the left side has done its duty... I suppose I need to be more diligent in getting some information out of them. We've lost the venous drainage on the left so I will wait for the medical team and will him to grow some more while we wait.

Thanks so much for the reply.
