I am 18, turning 19 in August and just found out in March that I have a left frontal AVM. My most annoying/concerning symptom is my facial numbness. Is anyone else experiencing this? The right side of my face is almost always numb, and it makes it difficult to speak, and my words often slur, so it can be embarrassing. The left side of my face can often hurt or tingle, and my lips will tingle on and off throughout the day. I wear glasses, but since my face is so numb it can get so annoying to have something constantly on my face. It also feels uncomfortable to touch my face or around my eyes.
This last thing will be a little hard to explain. Since my face has become to incredibly numb over the past year or so since all my symptoms have started, I feel like my face does not belong to me. Do me a favor and touch your face. Does it feel like it belongs to you? Does it feel like YOUR face? To me it does not feel like a part of my body.
Is anyone else experiencing this intensity of facial numbness??
Hi Emily, I have something similar, just not on the face. Since my AVM ruptured on the right side of my brain, my entire left side has a similar numbness. When I touch/feel something with my left hand, it doesn’t feel how I expect it to be. My left side is constantly in a tingly/numbing state. I was told it’s because your nerves are making new connections to the other side, so at times it doesn’t feel like it’s your own body part. I was also told in time, this will improve, and I believe it has.
Hi Emily - Have you had your AVM removed or is it inoperable? You should speak to your doctor about your numbness and perhaps there is a solution for you. Please keep us posted.
Thank you both for your replies. It is not ruptured and I am actually seeing a neuro surgeon later this month to get more details. Will definitely keep everyone updated
I don't have the exact same side effects as you but to cheer you up a bit I still have a funny numbness and tingling on the left side of my brain. That is where my AVM was. Its like it falls asleep like your leg dose some times. My AVM was over 10 years ago now. I've gotten use to it and it doesn't happen as often but another reason it feels weird is because the left side of my brain has a titanium plate in it after my surgery's. So interesting when I tap my itch and sounds like a hammer hitting steal. Another funny one is when I am going threw airports. When they scan me and say have you removed all metal objects. My reply well all but one.
