That’s a pretty wide topic, but I do know there is often spasticity effects following a variety of brain injury, including AVM bleeds, treatments etc. I did experience some myself but mostly away now, I had the trigger finger effect, where I would get an involuntary contraction. The dexterity piece is not something I ever really looked into, but I did a google search “finger spasticity vs dexterity” and found a great deal of information. This included physio references and from credible sources. Might be worth a look. Take Care, John.
Thank you John. Daughter is hoping she can type in the future. I am also looking into FES functional electrical stimulation. Anyone has experience with this?
My son had left hemiparesis following his stroke and had to learn to walk again along with writing and using his left hand again. He did a lot of OT for his left hand to get the strength and functioning back. Therapeutic finger putty was one we used quite often at home. We put about 10 small beads in it and he would need to manipulate the putty to pick out the beads out one by one and then when he was done, he’d have to push them back in one by one so that they were hidden back inside the putty. We used the blue and green theraputty which are on the firmer side.
Also, using a Lite Brite (the game from the 1980s, which is still sold today) was also helpful for fine motor control and building finger strength by putting the pegs on one by one on the board and taking them off one by one. It comes with a pack of stencils, but if you run out, you can photocopy them. However, I used cardstock for the copies as regular printer paper did not have enough resistance. The Lite Brite was one of the activities he didn’t mind doing and could do while he was watching shows.
Hope that helps. I know it’s tough. My son’s left foot still hasn’t come back yet - he can’t move his toes or his ankle independently. For some reason, the brain doesn’t want to talk to his toes/ankles yet. From what I hear that’s the last part to come back, but it is really slow progress. We are trying to keep hope that in time he’ll get there.
Hello,
Thank you for your reply. Daughter said her putty had gone soft and she wanted new ones.
Your response triggered an intervention! I tried to massage all her left side and constantly placing massagers on her limb to soften the muscles in my thinking “it would be easier for the electrical pathway when it comes” For daughter her left hand is the longest to slowly come back. Prayers for you and your child and for all of us ![]()
There are different products I came across. Ipsihand you place a gadget on the head and another to the finger. We are waiting for insurance that kept on getting denied. I heard if you pay it’s $30 thousand this price is not valid it’s a conversation between other product. Another is neurofenix - not available for no. Bioness is another but its needing clearance due to her Cyberknife. I am so desperate….
