We have made it through the first embolization successfully!!
The neurosurgeon was able to successfully embolize a portion of the AVM with onyx liquid embolic agent and reduced the size of active AVM by approximately 1 cm. He embolized the area that borders the motor cortex and thankfully Luke has had no deficits or issues other than some transient dizziness. The procedure lasted about 3.5 hours and he stayed overnight in the PICU and was discharged this morning. He is one tough kid and remains in good spirits
Now we wait a few weeks and see how he does and wait for the team to decide the next steps. There was mention of possibly repeating another staged embolism before the final embolization and surgery to remove it. They will contact us soon to let us know. We are just thankful to get this one done and be able to spend the holidays home.
Thanks again for all the encouragement and support from the wonderful people here! Although none of us want to be here I am thankful for the ones that have come together and made this place. It makes a difference for those of us that have found ourselves dealing this condition.
Merry Christmas!!
Best wishes,
Brandi
