Hi Everyone, just a quick question,my first neuro would not put me on ibuprofen ,says its bad for brai n avm’s,well this was a year ago,my new doctor put me on 800mg ibuprofen for headaches and head pains, anyone ever hear of not being able to take this medicine,?? thanks for the input,
I was told by certain doctors that ibuprofen was bad for avm’s and if there were to be a hemorrhage and such they would have a hard time with stopping the bleed. I had a doc put me on a couple meds that weren’t really good for me but didnt have any problems. they recommend to stay away from any meds that can act as blood thinners. There are other meds out there that they say work better for head pains and headaches…but I have yet to find one. haha. Good luck and just be sure to talk to your doctor about your concerns.
Thanks Brittany, thats what i was told from my first neuro a year ago, this new one today told me that it would not do any harm,so I told him what my first doctor said and this one said aww he dont know, trust me its safe, lol,so many doctors with so many answers brittany, and sometimes,I think the best doctor is my avm family,we are in the same boat and seem to understand…thanks again, hope your doing wonderful, hows the baby??? ((hugs))
I wasn’t told it wasn’t good for the AVM expect that it thins the blood and like brittany said if there is a bleed it would be harder to stop it. Does it actually do something to the AVM itself eg. weaken it, or make the blood flow through it in greater volume, etc.? I know I only give Tylenol to Andrew now.
Caroline- same as Brit & Janice. No blood thinning types of meds. No asprin, tylenol! That’s what I have been told my entire life. By ALL of the docs I’ve seen…and there have been many. I’m very surprised by the nonchalant attitude of this new doc and him trying to say the other guy didn’t know!!! Yikes!
Hi Caroline, for years the doctors were giving me niacin, ibuprofen, and motrin. When they found out about the aneurysms they stopped giving them to me and put me on other headache medicines. The only one I remember is imitrex, because it is the one that worked for me for a short time. I also noticed that the beats (heartbeat sounds in head) got worse when I was on the ibuprofen, niacin, and motrin. I think it just thins your blood and I don’t think it harms the avm itself, but I’m just a person suffering with them, I’m no expert!!! Remember that doctors in the same field don’t always agree on the same things either. They have certain opinions about things just like normal people, because hey, they are normal people.
Isan’t it a blood thinner ? Don’t sound good to me , I would read up on that >>>
i was told the same as sonja…definatley a no-no
Tylenol is fine…I was told nothing with Asprin only Tylenol …Tricia ibuproren is anti-inflamiyary maybe there is no asprin in it ? I still can’t beleve you take asprin …what if you have a bleed it be worse …you would think ?
My doctor told me the same about the blood-thinning; can’t take Ibuprofen before the op.
Thank you everyone, that was the same feeling i had,800mg of motrin, blood thinner is crazy,I think my first doc was rite a year ago, thanks sooooo much!!! love you guys, xxoo
I was told the same for Jaclyn. Only tylenol (xtra strength). No Motrin, Ibuprofen, or Asprin. There is no risk unless there is a bleed and then it acts as a blood thinner…and then it’s too late.
I seem to remember my doctor telling me not to take Ibuprufen during the last weeks before the embolization, for it thins the blood and they might have a hard time stopping it while they’re working on it. Not sure if I could take it now but 8 days after the first embo? I still have a bit of a headache in the area of the AVM, and would certainly like to take some.
Wouldn’t it actually help now, to get the blood to go through the capillaries?
Definitely no aspirin, Ibuprofen, or even decongestants! They are all blood thinners and very dangerous to us!
is anyone else on dilantin to prevent seizours?
because im on that and wanted to no how long i would be on it for
