Inspirational Books

Could anyone recommend some inspirational books to read regarding AVMs or strokes that really touched you or you could relate to after all this. The one I am reading now is pretty good…its called “After Surgery, Illness or Trauma”

Georgia, that sounds like a great book, I’d like to read it too, do you have the authors name? I read JilL Bolte Taylor’s book called My Stroke of Insight, which was helpful for sure, and good for my family to read and help them understand better. But The book that has helped me the most was written by a Brain Surgery survivor who didnt have an AVM but had a tumor. But her descriptions of dealing with doctors, pysical therapists and how people responded to her were so thoughtful, and actually very very funny becuase she shows how silly some of the way we are talked to can be. It is called I Had Brain Surgery What is Your Excuse by Suzy Becker and it was very inspirational and like haveing a great conversation with someone who really understands.

Also lately ive been feeling like im dealing with post-traumatic stress issues, and it sounds like your book could help me understand that and deal with it, maybe?

I read the Book by Lance Armstrong the cyclist- its nout about the bike
that really inspired me as he was on top of the world similar age to me, and went through a brain tumour cancer and is back on top. its a good read, its motivated me alot, never to give up and so on. its a very motivational book.

Hi Georgia,

I read My Stroke of Insight as well and found it to be helpful. The author and I have a couple of mutual acquaintances, which made it even more significant.

Take care,

Debbie

I defiantly recommend My Stroke of Insight, especially to those around you - I think it helped me more than it helped my husband with his recovery.

Ive just ordered A Dented Image: Journeys of Recovery from Subarachnoid Haemorrhage for my wife who had a haemorrhage during her AVM removal - it has really good reviews on Amazon, and is fully of stories from folk who have recovered from bleeds.

This website I found from another stroke survior has a great way to descibe disability to others. I even had an Ah Ha moment after reading it. I REALLY felt less alone and seeing what I am experiencing in writing was incredibly helpful! Please read and share with others!

Georgia,
The most life-changing book I read specifically on AVM’s is an oldie but a goodie! “A Bomb in the Brain,” by Steve Fishman. This book literally changed my life and got me very involved in the ‘old’ AVM Support Group (S.F., CA), which brought out the advocate in me!

Another good read was “Brain Surgeon,” by Lawrence Shainberg. Though “Brain Surgeon” is a novel and not an AVM-related book, I was so moved by that book following my 1st surgery in 1988 I wrote the author who in turn told me of “A Bomb in the Brain.” Funny how life works like that…

Happy reading!
