It never ends

So I am 18 months post op after a bleed..everything is finally getting back to normal except constan headaches. I know nothing about seizures...this was my first one. Is it possible I will have just one. or once you have one, u ususually have more? Also, much that I read says seizures usually do not cause brain damage. i am so scared that i will have brain damage from a seizure. Is there any information anyone can give me. Also, y mother swears I had a seizure cause I am constantly drinking coffee (it helps the headaches) any connection between coffee and seizures?

Howdy,

My guess is if you have had one seizure, you most likely will have more. Did they put you on any anti-S meds?

I used to think that seizures didn't hurt your brain, other than the risk that if you were sky diving, driving a car, or deep sea diving when you had a seizure, but after witnessing quite a few seizures and seeing how they show up on an EEG, I've change my mind. I don't think seizures are a bit good for your brain. Whether there is long term damage, don't know. But even after the physical effects of a seizure subside, the EEG will still show like a massive earthquake in progress for some time following each seizure.

However, in the giant scheme of things (AVM Bleed, Brain Surgery, etc) any brain damage from seizures is probably nothing to worry about.

Tell your Mom to Chill. I've never heard of coffee causing seizures. I'm assuming you don't drink like 5 or 10 gallons of it per day. (grin) I used to drink 12-15 cups per day, and my co-workers did as well. Never had seizures.

We were told some triggers for seizures were:

Stress-- getting overly tired, or not resting / sleeping enough

Skipping meals -- puts body in stress

Alcohol -- Can decrease the effectiveness of anti-S meds. Chari has a few glasses of wine on occassion and it's never triggered a seizure. I think they are speaking of drinking to excess.

Best wishes,

Hi Mary Kate, I had a seizure jack in 2004 & I have only had that seizure. So it is possible to only have one but everybody is different.I also drink alot of coffee & at the time of my seizure all I drank was coke and continued to do so after my seize.I’m not a doctor but I don’t think the coffee has anything to do with seizures.I do think you should bring some of these concerns up with your doctor.Take care

It is possible to have just one seizure, but everybody is different. If your seizure is a side effect from something you might have another one. I dont think the seizure will cause any brain damage- I was having 3-4 seizures a day for months and my brain is working at top speed, so I wouldnt be concerned. The only time I have seen any side effects on the brain from seizures is in children and that is because their brains are still developing. I have never heard of coffee causing seizures unless you were drinking enough to OD on it so I wouldnt worry about the daily cup.

Hi mary kate,

I don't have any answers. All I can offer is my continued and noending support.

Take care,

Debbie
