Keppra for seizures

To all my fellow AVMsurvivors…Good morning!

I know many of us has been prescribed Keppra for either the treatment of seizures, or like myself, for the prevention of them. One of my CVM’s is located at the right cortex, and I have been prescribed Keppra to be pro-active in treatment.

However, this medicine makes me VERY tired and spacey. I walk around my house like I am intoxicated…bumping into furniture, zoning out, etc.

My question is this…does it get better once your body gets used to it? I was prescribed to take it 2 times a day, but temporaril quit to make sure I was adjusting to the vertigo medication properly. I am concerned to start back on it, in fear of feeling like a walking zombie. Not a good feeling at all!

Thanks in advance for any insight on this medication, and how it made you feel, or are currently feeling.

Have a blessed day,
Crystal

Good morning Crystal,
Did your dr. recently prescribe Keppra?
After my 3/9/10 thalamic CM resection, the Dilantin I was on dropped in therapeutic level & I ‘seized the moment’ in ICU. :frowning: At that point they put me on a high dose of 4000 mg Keppra while weaning me off Dilantin.
Between surgery recovery, weaning off Dilantin & being on a high dosage of Keppra, I too felt spacey & sluggish. In time as I was able to come off Dilantin, decrease Keppra & my bodied adjusted to the medication, I felt better.
Let your dr. know how you’re feeling & see if it’s possible for him/her to adjust the dosage, or try you on another anticonvulsant.
Take care & hope you’re feeling better my friend!

Hi Crystal…I’ve been on Keppra since I had my brain bleed and cran…I do bump into things but I never new it was or wasn’t because of the Keppra. I have trouble sleeping so taking the Keppra doesn’t effect me that way. Since I don’t remember much about the first year I took the med whether it caused problems, but now taking for 3 1/2 years, I do know that it doesn’t seem to cause me much in the way of problems now.

One thing I do know is that I myself (bad idea) cut down on the Keppra in the 2nd year and I had a grand mal seizure…so I make sure I take my med on time twice a day and I haven’t had a seizure since then. I’m on 1,000 MG in the AM and 1,000 in the PM.

I hope what I answered somewhat helps.

Louisa

it could be that you become too much. in this case it’s an overdose/intoxication.
please ask the doctor!
I had something like this with lamictal + keppra 2 years ago. I am staggered by the house and I had to hold myself on the walls like drunken. the dose was reduced from lamictal and all was well again.
now I take 750 mg keppra in the morning 250mg keppra in the late morning, 750 mg in the evening and 2 times a day 75mg lamictal.
