A year ago, I had a seizure as a result of an AVM. I had a craniectomy (one year today) and a cranioplasty in February 2026. Since then, I’ve had rehabilitation done, and a year later I am able to return to work on September 1st.
I haven’t had any more seizures. On the advice of my neurosurgeon, I have been gradually reducing my dosage of Levetiracetam/Keppra and yesterday I got the last pill.
The problem is that I’m experiencing some withdrawal symptoms: dizziness, headaches, anxiety, fatigue, hot flushes - all the effects I was warned about.
Did you experience this? How much longer will it last? Any advice is appreciated.
My initial dose was 2000 mg (1000 mg, two times a day). My seizure was in July 2025, and I started to reduce in May 2026 - 500 mg, then 250 mg (two times a day).
I’ve not used Keppra but I’m hoping some others will see your enquiry.
If it is any consolation, my wife could write the patient information leaflet for every drug — she seems to get every side effect from everything she has to take!! It’s not the best skill to have
A great question to ask, as there are several medications that require weaning. Although Keppra was not the medication I needed to wean, I weaned my medication VERY SLOWLY, probably slower than I needed. I encountered no withdrawal symptoms that way. Did you consult your practitioner? (You may have to take a lower dose, reset, and then continue with weaning at a slower pace?)
