Limitations after craniotomy?

I had a craniotomy to remove my AVM that bled a little over two months ago on Nov. 7th. I was left with almost no damage from the surgery or AVM. I recently went to the neurosurgeon for a check-up. I find this very hard to believe, but the dr said there are no limitations following a craniotomy. There is nothing I’m not allowed to do. I just feel like after such a serious procedure there has to be some sort of something that i shouldn’t be doing. I am not sure if he is correct or if he is just really laid back. DId anyone else’s dr give any limitations following their craniotomy?

We just came home from the hospital today, following my daughter’s craniotomy. Our surgeon said no exertion (P.E. etc.) for a month and no contact sports (or bike riding, trampoline jumping etc.) for 3 months until the bone plate heals. I’m sure they are all different, but that’s what we were told today.
She also has no deficits from the previous hemorrhage or the craniotomy.

Thanks…that makes a lot more sense cause zero limitations just seemed ridiculous…I was happy but at the same time suspicious…There are more limitations with a root canal

Hello Mary Kate,
Only limitations my husband was given was no snow skiing that winter (his crani was 10/3/08) then after that good to go! So enjoy life!
Blessings!
Marie

Her restrictions may also be because she is only 10, and I think he used a special absorbable plate that they can use on kids, instead of a titanium one. We liked that idea for her, but might explain the 3 month restriction until her skull heals together.

I was 9 when I had mine done, and I was told to take it very easy for a few months following the operation. I was taken out of PE, was told not to run around the house/yard, and to just take it very, very easy.

Nea’s doctor told her she had no restrictions as well, but this was at her 6 week check up.

Wow, this is really great to hear. I am in the process of having my pre-craniotomy embos, and this really gives me hope that all will be well. My Dr. said that I would have some left side weakness, it just depended on how the surgery went. I am really glad that you are doing this good. You must have a great Dr. I am pretty confident in my Dr. as well. He has some pretty impressive credentials. I hope you continue to be well and have a wonderful full life.
Peace Dave

Wow that’s really good - must be happy with you if he said that. Such good news.

I’m due to have craniotomy around May and have been told by some people (can’t remember who though, i’ve seen so many!) that I’d have to take it easy for a few months. My surgeon said if it went well no work for three months afterwards.

I’ve also been told by someone who went through this no driving for 12 months afterwards - has anyone else been told this?

I couldn’t drive for four weeks because they were scared I would have a seizure, because the swelling in the brain increases the risk of a seizure. Then I was allowed to drive. But,I was told, if you do have a seizure, you can’t drive for six months until they are sure you won’t have one while driving. Good luck with the surgery. I’m sure the driving and limitations will depend on how the surgery goes and where the AVM is located. They first told my mom I would have at least a year recovery and likely paralysis on my left side, which did not happen. They never know until you wake up. Hopefully, you’ll be lucky like me and have few side effects.

I had my surgery back when this was all experimental. It took over 24 hours and all kinds of problems. It took me 3 or 4 months before I could drive. It was more of a physical limitation and not doctor’s instruction. When I did drive and go back to work, I went full time too fast. You should take it easy getting back into life. You will be the best judge on how to do this.
