Newly diagnosed …

Hi,
I’m new here
I just found out that I have a 5 mm deep avm in my cerebellum.
As I’m sure everyone here knows, I’m terrified.
The major problem is that I live in a country where the treatment for something like this is pretty bad…
So if you have any ideas about centers in Romania or doctors who deal with something like this here. I would be grateful.
And if there are people who have an avm in their cerebellum and are willing to talk to me, maybe they could share their experience with me. I would be very happy.
Thank you!

Welcome to our family. You’ll see here often that we say its great you found us, but too bad you were looking! Being terrified is most of our reactions, and we go through a roller coaster of emotions. We have an amazing group of people here with a lot of experience. I can’t help you with anything associated to Romania, but can say we are here to support you!

My AVM was in my temporal lobe, and while we share a lot we are all different. It may be worth exploring other options within Europe, making sure all avenues within your home are examined as well. Maybe have a peak at what is available at Bagdasar-Arseni Emergency Clinical Hospital as a potential area if it is possible for referral. We are here for you, John.

Hi @Amareea

We have a small community of @BrainCerebellum members, some of whom have had an operation to address their AVM (including, for example, radiotherapy) and some of whom have been advised that just keeping an eye on their AVM is best for now. By tagging the team, i hope one or two will share their story.

You will find their stories in the Types of AVM / Cerebellum & Brainstem area of the site.

Welcome on board! Its great that you found us

Hey,

How sad to hear about your situation. I also had an AVM in my cerebellum, but the doctors never discovered it. We only found out when it was too late and the AVM had burst. I had an accident when I was eight years old. Still, I’m thankful to live in a country where they were able to treat me properly.

I don’t think I can help you medically, but if you ever want to talk or have questions, feel free to reach out.

Good luck

Hi Amareea,

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re going through this. So many of us here truly understand how overwhelming it can feel. I still remember it like it was yesterday when the doctors told me something was wrong in my head. It felt unreal.

I was diagnosed a year ago with a brain AVM and countless aneurysms on the left side of my brain, between the cerebellum and brainstem. I was first offered an embolization, but since I was eligible for CyberKnife treatment, I decided to go with that option and I’m so grateful I did.

I don’t personally know any doctors in Romania, but I live in Munich, Germany, where I received my diagnosis and treatment. If you’re thinking about getting a second opinion, I can truly recommend Klinikum Großhadern. It’s known as one of the best hospitals in Germany and Europe in that Neurovascular and Neuroradiology. I had my CyberKnife at the Europäische Radiologie Zentrum Munich, and my experience there was excellent.

Please don’t lose hope. :yellow_heart: Things can slowly start to improve and you’re definitely not alone in this.

Hello,
Thank you very much for your answer,
Unfortunately I can’t afford to travel for another opinion.
I’ve been sending my case to several hospitals in Europe in the hope that maybe they can help me, but honestly I’m really losing hope.
The pain and chronic fatigue have drained me and the panic is beyond description…
I still hope to have a happy ending and somehow manage to get treatment…
Thank you very much for your answer and I hope with all my heart that your treatment works!

Hi,
I’m so sorry you only found out about it when it broke, but I’m so glad you got professional medical care and are doing well now!
Thank you for your response and kind thoughts!

Hello!

I found out about my AVM 2 years ago after a bleed.Mine is in the cerebellum as well.i had cyber knife treatment and I’m waiting to find out if I had any progress in December.

I’m living in Greece we are not that far.The cost here for radiation treatment is about 2000€ and we have plenty of treatment options ,what options do you have there? What did the doctor advise you to do?

Can you give me a contact from the clinic so I can send the images? Maybe I can find out if something can be done…

Romania’s National Institute of Neurology and Neurovascular Diseases in Bucharest offers a multidisciplinary approach to AVM treatment, which includes microsurgical resection, endovascular embolization, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Treatment plans are personalized based on the AVM’s specific characteristics, such as its grade and location, with microsurgery often being a gold standard for complex cases, according to studies published in 2024 and 2025.
