I had my first seizure post birth of my daughter (neurologist believed it was due to stress and scar tissue over where my AVM was) , and they put me on Tegretol. I don't mind being on anti seizure meds but this one is giving me the worst time compared to the Dilantin last year. I have a full body rash that is REALLY itchy, keeps randomly picking places to show up on my body, or get really itchy (already called and asked to be put back on Dilantin), and I feel like it makes me super super slow and stupid. Anyone else get a rash or anything on this med? I still haven't heard anything back on being switched back, for now I'm practically bathing in Calamine lotion and taking Claritin. >_<
Hi Toni,
There are lots of anti-S meds, so if you are reacting to tegretol, the DR should RX something else.
Side effects of each drug can be different for different people (You already know that I'm sure). Then when you taper on one and off another, the effects of BOTH drugs together can create yet more side effects, different for different people............. UGH!
I wish you well.

Hi Toni. A lot of members are on Keppra. Like Ron mentioned…lots of anti-S drugs put there. Good Luck!
Hi Toni,
I was on Dilantin for many years and after my 4th surgery, was switched to Keppra. In combination of deep brain surgery recovery, while tapering off Dilantin and starting Keppra, it took awhile to adjust to the side effects, but now do ok on it.
One thing to consider & discuss w/ your dr. re: Dilantin, is the suseptibility of bone loss w/ Dilantin (or so I was told by my neuro).
Best wishes,
Patti
Toni,
Here's a list of the MANY choices of anticonvulsants to choose from - slightly overwhelming ;), but reassuring to know if one doesn't work, there are options... :)
