Re-learning to walk

Does anyone have any thoughts or info on why it is necessary to re-learn to walk after brain surgery? I haven't been able to find anything.

Are you anticipating needing to re-learn walking after your surgery?
If so, will the hospital have in-hospital neuro rehab, or will you have to be transferred to a neuro rehab ctr?
After my thalamic (deep brain) surgery, I spent 2 weeks in neuro rehab re-learning to walk, re-gain my strength & adapt to the new me. I also required some in-home PT rehab.
Best wishes.

I had my AMV surgery in July 2011 and also underwent PT in a rehabilitation facility to learn to walk again. I am wondering why this is...that we have to re-learn to walk again.

I had a rupture and was in hospital and rehab for 8 months had to re-Learn to walk and although I can walk now I have a balance issue very common with brain injury but my avm affected my balance as well so I now walk with a ca me…(more for other people) I look like I’m drunk all the time otherwise x

You don't necessarily need to re-learn to walk. It depends on the circumstances. In my case I was in a coma for nearly a month after my bleed. During that time my muscles became so weakened it was impossible for me to walk. It wasn't that I didn't know how to walk I just couldn't. A month of intense physical rehab got me walking again.

I just think being able to walk is a major part of life. It’s important to me. I think it’s about regaining function and your ability to do the things you could before and trying to be, at least to some extent, the person you were before. I know I’d be devastated if I couldn’t walk anymore, but I guess it’s different for everyone…why? Are you struggling with walking?

at 51 had an AVM that ruptured in my brain had to relearn to walk now 18 months later cant move my ankle and will probably have to walk with a cane for the rest of my life, but dont ever give up stsy positive

:) I appreciate everyone's kind words and encouragement, but I do not have an issue with walking. I am wondering why we have to learn to walk again after surgery. As in, what happens that makes it necessary to re-learn?

Do u mean why we can’t walk after surgery & have to relearn how?? Or what is the purpose of relearning to walk if you don’t want to?

I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to walk again. :) I am asking the first part of your reply, why we can't walk and instead have to relearn to walk?

Oh Ok. Well I think that's because an AVM is a type of stroke, which causes the side of your body (opposite the side of your brain where your injury occurred) to be paralyzed. So, after your AVM, one of your legs was pretty much out-of-the-game for a while. Then, since it wasn't moving for a while, the muscles atrophied. So basically relearning to walk is necessary because that one leg and your brain need to not only rebuild connections-so that when you think of walking, your leg will act- but also you need to regain the muscle tone in your leg so that it can support your body etc. again. My mom told me they started out working out my leg while i was sitting to build a little bit of strength and for the mind to relearn how that leg moves. Then, we moved on to rebuilding strength. But basically in short, you have to relearn because your AVM temporarily paralyzes one of your legs, and that leg then atrophies. Thus, you have to "relearn" to rebuild the connections to the brain to that leg, and you have to regain muscle tone for it to be able to support you. Hope that helps :)

That's exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you so much - all of that makes complete sense. Thank you!!!!!

No problem!!
