Recommendations on psychologists?

Hello,

Does anyone have any recommendations on specific types of psychologists who deal with people with chronic diseases, and even narcissistic abuse? I have been in and out of therapy over the last 7 years when my health/personal life issues started progressing downwards. I’ve mostly seen “licensed” mental health counselors. It never really helped much, I felt like I could get better advice or conversations by simply talking to a wall. I finally found an actual psychologist whom I’ve been seeing for over a year now. I was optimistic at first, but now I feel like it’s a waste of my time, as I often feel worse after a session since she cant seem to understand the daily battles we go through when our health is compromised. As rare as having an AVM is, I feel even more isolated in my journey since mine is located in my neck/face. That compiled with also being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a genetic mutation that makes me susceptible to certain cancers, and being surrounded by toxic people who also don’t care much has been a true struggle. Do you think it makes a difference if they’re counselors, therapists, or psychologists? Or is it really just constant trial and error, and hope for the best?

I am sorry for all that you are going through. I know it’s got to be really hard. In my experience, the type of provider has not had an impact on quality of service for me personally. However, it can be hard to find a good match. I did a search on psychology today for therapists in Florida who work with those who have chronic illnesses which might be a good place to start: Find Chronic Illness Therapists and Psychologists in Florida - Psychology Today
