I had an AVM in the cerebelum 3 years ago, the nuero phych doesn’t think my memory will improve he thinks my brains recovery is done, what’s your experience with AVMs?
@McLuke
Hi Luke
Post rupture in 1990 I was able to learn new things at times but it is often slow and for me usually done by constant repetition.
I think i got my driving licence back in 93 but then had to relearn how to drive again (the bits they don’t test you on like skidding!)
So I’m now 30+ years survivor and think i have good year where I remember things and bad ones where I don’t.
You’re on a rocky road…
Tim
I had my crainiotomy done exactly 36 years ago. All the memory recovery stopped the first 6 months after surgery. It’s been tough with such a poor memory, but I’ve learned methods to handle the situation. Computers and smartphones have helped. Using the calendar system to remember things (that’s what told me today was year 36!) has been a good idea. Still I forget lots of things.
My neuropsychologist said the AVM did most of the damage to my memory before the surgery. He also pointed out that compared to the rest of the AVM group, I’m doing pretty good. I kept a full time job for 30 years after surgery and have been retired since then.
Retirement has helped in more ways than just not having to work. We downsized and got rid of a lot of junk. I was still trying to do too many things. Doing just a few things has made it easier.
