Does or has anyone experienced 'tremors' or shakes? If so, what would potentially be causing it (please don't say it's a type of seizure - Dear God no, I pray) and is there anything that helps to stop it from happening?
I had/have left side weakness and my left arm shakes at times. (I also write left handed and have to just stop & wait for the shaking to stop when I am writing. Also, I spill drinks, etc. if it starts to shake & I am holding a glass of liquid, etc. in my left hand.) I currently do not take any prescribed medications (such as anti-seizure meds., etc.).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... thank you.
I am no expert but if you are mentally aware that it is happening ...probably not a seizure. For weeks after my bleed my left leg would shake. It could be your brain sending out incorrect signals to your left side. However...once again I am no expert and this is just a thought.
Are you doing any special exercises to strengthen the left side?
Thanks, Barbara, and whewwww! Nothing really special… just everyday, routine things right now. If it’s the brain sending out incorrect messages, do you know of anything (any site, exercise, etc.) that would help resolve that issue? Do you think strengthening exercises would help resolve it? Did you do anything special to get your leg to stop shaking?
Cindy, I sometimes feel a tiny little bit weak and shaky on my left hand since my AVM introduce itself to my life, but only when I’m using it. If I’m resting it will never shake on its own. I have had small muscle twitching in different locations of my left side but thats it for involuntary movement for me. I’m obviously no expert on epilepsy but when I asked my neurosurgeon what dose a seizure feel like? he said it can be anything as mild as a weird feeling like a hot or cold flash to tingling, twitching, numb feelings, blackouts to a full on grand mal convulsion. I’ve had just about all of the mild small stuff throughout my entire life now that I think about it and I’m sure most people have experienced one or more of the above. I’m only guessing here but unless these shaking spells just come on all in a sudden out of the blue and goes away shortly after its probably just from your weakness on that side. That’s how I self diagnose myself anyways. Unless it gets worse I’m not concerned about it.
Hi Cindy. I live with this as well. I have it on my whole left side and occasionally my right arm. Sometimes my left leg shakes so bad I can’t even stand on it. My doctors call it “involuntary muscle movement disorder”. Seizure meds are often prescribed to get it under control. I was told it’s from a miss-firing of the electrical impulses in the brain.
You might check into something called a Vegal nerve stimulator. I have heard it used to control things similar to this. It's fits in like a pacemaker if I understand correctly. Not sure if it applies, but worth checking.
Ron, You are right, that is how it works. Good Idea!
I had a couple doctors explain it to me. They run small wires (under the skin) from the stimulator (that is placed in your chest) into the area of the brain that is causing the problem. They say it keeps the miss-firing of the electrical impulses, I think that's what it's called, under control. They said, If the problem is coming from a specific area of the brain, it's easy for them to do and very little to no side effects.
Cindy, It's worth looking into. You may be a candidate for it.
Hi CIndy, Tim has tremors/shakes… He too spills things and sometimes can not write for a hour or so until they stop… when he first started them I too thought them to be seizues (mini) but they say no. The new doctors say its just an affect from his AVM surgery, they do not give him a direct answer, or one I liked anyway. But all his scans and new neuro testing came back clear. Some days his tremors/shakes are worse and some days are not there at all… I just visited him at college two weeks ago… we went out to eat and he was holding his fork with steak on it and his hand was shaking all over the place… I grab his hand ( bringing the fork to his mouth) and asked if it is gettign worse and he said… well today it is… LOL ( I guess he laughing right) I was concerned and of course excused myself went to the bathroom and called his neurologist, and he said just being tired could make it worse, to not worry… Do i feel better NO! but I did see the scans and all his blood work. Im not sure if this helps you… Tim did have muscle/tendon damge done to his neck from his 16 hour surgery… they say it can just be from the pull in his damaged tendons spasaming… Tim takes no meds either… I hope it helps a little
Thank you, Mary. It really does help to know this.
