AVM on the sole of my foot - symptoms, treatment, advice

I have an AVM on the sole of my left foot that until about 3 years ago was never problematic. In fact up until then I thought it was just a red birth mark. I’m now dealing with constant swelling, shooting pains in my big toe and through my foot, painful foot and leg spasms, and ulcers. One ulcer formed this past December and then a second one formed about 3 weeks ago. The first is still not healed. I’m barely able to walk these days because of the pain.

I had one embolization with sclerotherapy this past Christmas Eve and I have another scheduled for the end of March. I’ve also talked to a plastic surgeon about surgically removing the AVM and doing a free flap skin graft.

I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking for with this post. I guess if anyone has any advice on what I could be doing to mitigate the pain or any questions/topics I should be bringing up with my Interventional Radiologist.

I’m at the end of my rope with this pain so I guess anything is helpful at this point.

There are a bunch of patients here with an AVM in their foot, so you are not alone, and you’ve posted in exactly the right place for them to see the post, so I hope some will respond to your general call for help!

In general, I tend to feel that foot AVMs are among the most tricky, so it will be good to hang together with the other foot AVMers and see how each of you get on. I think it is @CarloM who is in a very similar situation and has recently undergone embolization with electro poration therapy and I’m hoping that makes a significant difference for him.

Very best wishes,

Richard
