Keppra and depression

Has anyone felt great emotional saddness while on Keppra? Has anyone had any remedies for this that worked?

Nea has tried 3 different types of keppra (500 mg twice a day, 1000 time release 1 a day and 750 1 a day) and still is afflicted by sudden, unreasonable saddness.

I hate to start down the path of having her take a medication to counteract the side effects of another medication but she just can't go through years of feeling this way. So we're going to talk with her doctor about a medical solution.

But I wanted to see if there are people here who have a similar experience and how they handled it.

Thanks so much.

i was on keppra i don’t know if my sadness was due to the medication or if it is because i miss my independence. wish you the best of luck ohh what helped me get over some of my sadness is talking about my feelings and what bothers me

i was also on Keppra and i also don’t know if my sadness was cause of it my situation maybe is also different cause the whole problem was located on the right temporal lobe that is responsible for all emotional matters and since they removed it i don’t know to what extend i can blame Keppra.

My son is also on Keppra 500mg 2x’s daily. So far the only side effect he has had is weight gain. With the medicine he is 30 lbs heavier then when he is off the medicine. It makes his appetite uncontrollable. Have you tried other anti seizure medicines yet?

Marla, no we haven’t. We’re waiting till she’s on summer break… a week or so more. I just talked to my sis-in-law who is an internist who recommends we talk with a psychiatrist as well as persuing other meds with her neurologist.

So sorry to hear that Nea has had to fight overwhelming, unexplained feelings of saddness. I have bouts with those every once in awhile, and they are confusing and troubling. I hope that a change in medication or talking with a psychiatrist can help.

Take care,

Debbie

John, did you use something else for anit-seizure or did you decide you’d risk seizures?

I have been on both Dilantin and Keppra. First Dilantin and they switched me over to a more “modern” medication (keppra) where they prescribed me 1000 mg each day. I was completely depressed, ALWAYS tired and lacking energy. When I went to my German neurologist he said that the 1000 mg of keppra that the Americans had put me on was wayy too high of a dosage. They told me that keppra had many side effects including: mood changes, sleepiness, problems with cognitive thinking, etc. so they slowly had me cut down on the medication to a reasonable dosage. Check to see if the dosage is too high (get the opinion of another physician), or see if there is another medication that she could switch to with less side effects?
