Hi! Here is my story. I was 16 years old when I suddenly were very sick in what turned out to be a severe hemorrhage caused by a AVM from birth . For a couple of weeks I struggeled between life and death but doctors were able to save me. Since my avm was placed close to the center of vision, surgery was impossible and I was treated with radiation instead. It took me two years to recover but I have now lived 25 years as free from my avm. The only injury I have left is poor eyesight and a bad short-term memory. Please ask me for any questions.
Welcome! Thank you for sharing! JOHN!
Hi there. Thanks for sharing your story. Please could I ask whether you struggled with making a decision on whether to proceed with the radiation? And did it affect you in any other way?
Hi! My avm was located right in the center of my vision so there really were no other options. An operation or embolization risked damaging my vision even more than it already had.
The radiation didn’t affect me physically, but the hard part was that it took two years for the avm to be fully gone
Going through all that at 16 and now being 25 years free from AVM is so inspiring. Thanks for sharing. It really gives a lot of hope!
Best wishes,
Emily
